HYDERABAD: Arrests of political activists condemned

HYDERABAD, Feb 14: The Sindh National Council has condemned arrests of political activists and what it called extra-judicial killings by police.
It demanded that political activists arrested in the Gadap area of Karachi should be immediately released.
The central organizing committee of the council at a meeting held here on Monday also criticized the ongoing army operation in Balochistan and urged the government to end its oppressive measures.
Punhal Sario presided over the meeting which was attended by Hussain Bux Thebo, Dr Rahim Solangi, Dr Dodo Mehri, Ghulam Qadir Burdi and others.
It condemned demolition of villages of Sindhis in Karachi with a view to setting up colonies for outsiders.
The meeting said that any agreement between Pakistan and Bangladesh for rehabilitation of stranded Pakistanis would not be accepted. It maintained that economy of Sindh had already been destroyed because of rehabilitation of outsiders and settlement of stranded Pakistanis in Sindh would convert the indigenous population into a minority.
The Awami Tehrik condemned the alleged police excesses against nationalist leaders and activists in Malir.
In a statement issued here on Monday, party leader Ayaz Latif Palijo alleged that on the one hand criminals had been inducted into power in Sindh and on the other, political activists were being eliminated in extra-judicial killings.
He demanded a judicial enquiry into what he called extra-judicial killings of political activists in Karachi.
The Sindh National Party condemned a police raid on a public meeting of nationalist parties in Malir.
Party spokesman Ashraf Noonari accused police of resorting to violence on a peaceful protest procession, led by nationalist leaders Amir Bhambhro, Dr Qadir Magsi and Bashir Qureshi.
He alleged that Sindh had been converted into a police state.
He claimed that a large number of political activists were being held incommunicado by authorities.
He demanded a judicial inquiry into the killings of five people in Gulshan-i-Hadeed, Karachi, by police.
Our Larkana Correspondent adds: Disputing the police claim of recovering a service rifle from Bakhshal Mughairi, an activist of the Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz (JSQM), and implicated him in the murder of a former Larkana SSP’s gunman Nazar Mohammad, the JSQM took out a protest rally in Qambar and criticised police for implicating their worker in a false case.
They also demonstrated outside the local press club and raised slogans against police.
Speaking on the occasion, Qurban Khuhawar, Yunis Soomro and others alleged that police were out to arrest and implicate JSQM workers in fictitious cases throughout Sindh.
