New traffic system

LAHORE, Jan 16: A new traffic system will be introduced in five major cities of the province for modernizing traffic management and engineering. Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi said here on Monday while presiding over a meeting on traffic problems.

Five major cities — Lahore, Rawalpindi, Multan, Gujranwala and Faisalabad — would soon have a new traffic system, he said, and added: “A separate traffic cadre will also be evolved for each district and 600,000 new officers recruited for the purpose.”

He said these officers would at least be graduates, and their salaries be around Rs10,000 per month. They would receive training in the modern and latest traffic control system and have a separate uniform.

The chief minister said new traffic signals would be installed in addition to improving the licensing system. He directed the P&D chairman to prepare a final report on devising such a system and conduct survey of all roads.
