Bay colt Zoro upstages rivals in feature event
LAHORE, Jan 15: Four-year-old bay colt, Zoro, won in style the feature event, a class IV division I handicap race over the sprinting distance of 1200 metres during the Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday. Ridden by A. Imran and trained by Memraiz Khan, the 80 to 100 favourite, Zoro beat Mumtaz Mahal by four lengths. Storm Warning finished third while Stereo Nation completed the frame among only six runners.
The winner lay close behind the front-running Mumtaz Mahal and took to lead in the straight to win comfortably. He clocked one minute 13 second for the distance.
The most impressive winner of the afternoon was the four-year-old chestnut colt Alexander, who won the fifth and supporting event. Owned by Zaheer Aslam and ridden by jockey Javed Iqbal the colt is trained by Iqbal Nawab.
Alexander beat Hatam by seven lengths in an impressive style. Green Street and Safe And Sound completed the board among 14 runners.
In the fourth and second supporting event red-roan filly, Key Guy Doll showed a magnificent improvement to beat fancied colt Dumbo in a closely contested race. Jockey Khurrum Sheikh, who has recently returned from UK, rode the filly in a very powerful manner to beat Dumbo by a short margin.
Dumbo was very unintelligently ridden by jockey Shahid Rehman, who lost the race being over-confident and keeping his mount trailing far behind the leader, Key Guy Doll in the early part of the race.
The bay colt Fajr, owned by Tariq Shoaib and ridden by jockey Aamir Parvaiz beat three-year-old colt Sindbad by a short-head in the third race at the finishing post. Jockey M. Zeeshan, who rode Sindbad was fined rupees 2500 for his erratic handling of Sindbad.
Jockey Aamir excelled among riders. He first rode home the bay colt Namroud in the opener and then followed it with a close win on Fajr in the following event. Both of his winners were trained by Haji Ghulam Sarwar.
In spite of a chilly and cloudy weather with light drizzling in between the proceedings, a large number of people came to enjoy races when a small card of six events was gone through.
