SUKKUR: ‘SC opinion can be sought’

By Our Correspondent

SUKKUR, Dec 24: Justice (retd) Nasir Aslam Zahid has said if differences arise between federal and provincial governments over the Kalabagh dam issue, opinion can be sought from the Supreme Court as the NWFP government had done in the case of the Hasba bill.

He was inaugurating an office of the legal aid committee in the premises of the women’s prison here on Saturday.

The committee will provide free legal aid to woman and child prisoners.

Mr Zahid observed that the Supreme Court could give a verdict in the matter.

Regarding oath taking under the PCO, he said he was satisfied with his decision not to take the oath under the PCO. “However, judges who had taken the oath under the PCO are also my friends and if they had not taken the oath, the system would have collapsed,” he observed.

He said the government should allocated funds to improve conditions in jails.

He said delay in disposal of cases was due to shortage of judges. He said if the shortage was overcome, better results could be achieved.
