Swing and Trace Hit to fight for spoils today

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Dec 23: The season’s first duel among two Pakistan Derby contenders that has brightened up the Lahore Winter Meetings reaches its fitting climax when they measure each other in Christmas Cup at the Racecourseon Saturday.

Mian Maahir Ahmad owned and A. B. Malik trained shapely colt, Swing, takes on chestnut filly Trace Hit, owned by Khawaja M. Arif and trained by Haji Ghulam Sarwar.

It is a class IV handicap race to be gone over 1600m. A progeny of English sire, Stranger In Paradise out-of-Rosina Folly, Swing, has been performing very well during the ongoing meetings.

His three race unbeaten streak is already exciting for his caretaker Mahmood Khan, who is hoping the colt would win this first big event of the career to look for more in days to come.

Trace Hit, a daughter of Trace Creek out-of-Huckitta, has also won three races at random and will be going to belie her inconsistent performance so far.

Interestingly both the colt and the filly, has not so far gone over the middle distance of 1600m.

On bloodline both are to stay over the distance. Going through the previous performance Swing with his hat-trick of victories looks to be enjoying an edge over Trace Hit.

The supporting and fifth event, Sialkot Plate, a term race for two-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies to be contested over the sprinting distance of 1000m has eight acceptors barring last minute withdrawals.

Of them two attract attention on track work and pedigree. They are Herry Can View, a beautiful colt from Dazzling Star out-of-Tango Cash and Shim Jim, a fine-bred filly from English sire, Cisco Wells out-of-Let Get Going.

Cisco Wells, owned by Syed Pervaiz Hussain Shah died a couple of year’s ago, was from the lineage of famous Coolmore racing empire sire, Saddler Wells. They both should fight it out.

The colt, Ghoray Wah, who has won two races in-a-row will be going to complete a hat-trick of victories in the seventh and last race of the day, Bhakkar Plate, class IV division II and III combined handicap race over 1600m.

His close rivals could be Green Street, Stereo Nation and Penalty Corner. A card of seven events has been drawn for the Christmas Cup race day meeting.

First four events will be held over 1200m, the fifth over 1000m and the sixth and seventh over 1600m. The last two events will be held in floodlights.
