Kumble spins India to easy victory

NEW DELHI, Dec 14: India leg-spinner Anil Kumble grabbed his eighth 10-wicket match haul to lead India to an emphatic 188-run victory over Sri Lanka in the second Test on Wednesday. Kumble took four for 85 to bowl out Sri Lanka for 247 in their second innings shortly after lunch on the fifth day, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Sri Lanka were reduced to 203 for seven at lunch after being set a world record 436-run fourth innings victory target.

They added another 40 runs before off-spinner Harbhajan Singh provided the breakthrough by removing Mahela Jayawardene for a patient 67.

Jayawardene had shared a 68 run seventh-wicket partnership with Tillekeratne Dilshan (32) to frustrate Indian victory hopes.

Once Jayawardene was caught at short leg off bat and pad, however, the resistance ended and the Sri Lankan lost their last three wickets for four runs.
