KARACHI, Dec 5: The Jeay Sindh Mahaz (JSM) has opposed the construction of big dams in the country, saying that it would only serve the interests of a single unit particularly of the federation. JSM chief Abdul Khalique Junejo said that there was already a shortage of water in the Indus river system and we were not receiving water according to the 1991 accord.

Considering the ground realities, the JSM leader was of the view that the construction of any big dam including the Kalabagh and Basha dams was not advisable.

He said the rulers should not ignore the will of the people of the three smaller provinces and the resolutions passed by their respective provincial assemblies.

Mr Junejo maintained that the rulers of the country had always preferred the interests of the “dominating federating unit” while the interests of the smaller units had been ignored.

Taking important decisions without taking into consideration the sovereign will of the people from the smaller units, would in no way serve the interests of the country rather it would amount to serving the interests of that particular unit, he further stated.

The JSM leader regretted that the rulers in the country had always served the interests of “the big brother” in the name of national interest.

He failed to understand what kind of national interest is this in which the will of the three units out of four were ignored.

Under the present circumstances, the JSM leader said that every federating unit reserved its right of sovereignty and he demanded that this right of each federating unit should be restored.
