PESHAWAR: Winter tents for Alai valley

Bureau Report

PESHAWAR, Nov 18: The army with the assistance of the Polish government and an NGO has made arrangements for providing special winter tents at Maira tent village in the Alai valley. Over 600 tents have been provided to families who have migrated from hilltops and taken shelter in the tent village. Schools for boys and girls have also been set up there.

Besides, a mosque and a field hospital have been set up, whereas cemented toilets are under construction there, said an ISPR press release issued on Friday.

Arrangements for sewerage system and a warehouse for the World Food Programme have been finalized. A separate shed for the cattle owned by displaced people has also been made there to provide shelter to the livestock.

Two central kitchens have been made in the tent village to avoid fire incidents. Army engineers are busy removing debris of collapsed houses and buildings in the quake-battered areas.

To revive academic activities, the army with help from some NGOs has so far opened 18 schools for boys and girls in tent villages at Battal, Gul Maira, Chattar Plain, Balimang, Shakoora, Rangha, Sharkool, Kastra, Hassa and Balakot areas, where 115 teachers are imparting education to over 4,000 students.

Efforts are under way to open more schools in the quake-hit areas.
