ISLAMABAD, Nov 14: Police team investigating allegations of rape of Sonia Naz has finally asked the police station concerned to register rape case against two Faisalabad police officers, although the team said it still had no direct evidence to establish the charge.
Keeping in view the statements of Sonia Naz, her mother-in-law and father-in-law, members of the police inquiry team and Sajila Sehr, owner of a beauty parlour, Station House Officer (SHO) Satto Katla Police Station is being directed to submit challan against the accused, said a two-page inquiry report, which was submitted by team leader SSP Mohammad Aslam Tareen before a three- member bench of the Supreme Court here on Monday.
At the last hearing, the same inquiry team had reported that it had found “no evidence” to establish the charge of rape.
Now a case is being registered under Sections 10, 11, 16 and 18 of Offence of Zina (Enforcement of Hudood) Ordinance 1979 and Section 344/506/354/356 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), though during the course of investigation, no direct evidence has come on record against the accused, the fresh report said.
Led by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, the apex court had taken the matter on an application of a local lawyer Zulfikar Ahmed Bhutta, pleading to initiate a suo motu cognizance against police excesses on the lady.
Sonia Naz had accused SHO Jamshed Chishti of raping her on the directives and presence of Abdullah Khalid, Superintendent Police (SP) Investigations, Faisalabad, after keeping her in illegal confinement for a fortnight.
However, the bench while expressing its dissatisfaction over the report, had directed the team to collect more evidence, keeping in view the statement of Sonia Naz.
“In the light of the directions of the court, the investigation team re-examined and re-evaluated the entire evidence and the statements recorded in earlier inquiry report of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Zafar Ahmad Qureshi, the report said.
On the directions of the court, Sub Inspector (SI) Fayyaz Ahsan was also summoned, interrogated and arrested on November 10, 2005 from whose mobile phone some photographs of a nude woman was retrieved but these were found not to be of Sonia Naz.
