PESHAWAR, Nov 7: Health Minister Inayatullah Khan has lauded the efforts of welfare organizations for their relief work carried out in the quake-affected areas. Talking to injured medical volunteers and health officials during a visit to field hospitals set up by Unicef, Save the Children, UNHCR, Cuba and Ukraine at Battagram, Allai and Bisham on Monday, the minister acknowledged that the NWFP government could not provide full medical cover to the people injured in the earthquake owing to its meagre resources. He said that the role of the welfare bodies in the rescue operation was commendable.

He said most of the hospitals and facilities of the health department were damaged and were unable to provide treatment facilities, said an official handout.

The minister lauded the performance of the field hospitals and underlined the need of retaining it unless health department was able to rehabilitate and reconstruct its hospitals and dispensaries.

He especially lauded the services of the field hospital set up by a Ukrainian team in Bisham.

He said that he would forward a request to the Ukrainian government through federal health ministry and the NWFP chief minister to retain the services of its field hospital in Bisham on behalf of the injured people.

SENIOR MINISTER: NWFP Senior Minister Sirajul Haq has taken notice of the complaints about embezzlement and theft of relief goods sent for quake-affected people.

He directed the local administration and all other authorities concerned to take severe action against such elements and send lists of the officials to the provincial government involved in the crime.

He issued the directive to the authorities on receiving complaints from the people of the quake-affected areas.

The minister said such incidents might be rare in the affected areas but they needed prompt action and exemplary punishment for those involved in theft and embezzlement.
