ISLAMABAD, Nov 3: Local financial institutions and non-government organizations continue to contribute generously towards the relief of the quake-hit people. FWB: President of the First Women’s Bank, Ms Zareen Azim, called on Sehba Musharraf and presented her a cheque for Rs5 million as contribution to the President’s Relief Fund for earthquake victims.
NBP: The donations for the quake victims collected by National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) in the President’s relief fund, till Wednesday crossed Rs1 billion, a press release said.
The amount includes donations by NBP employees as well as contributions from the business community.
The NBP employees have been making efforts to motivate their clients and business community to contribute generously to the relief fund, press release added.
The bank employees have also contributed Rsl million in cash and relief goods worth Rs1 million to alleviate sufferings of the quake victims.
The bank has also hired two helicopters to help in relief efforts, press release said.
BRADFORD VARSITY TEAM: A two-member team of the Bradford University handed over a cheque for Rs0.2 million to Interior Minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao for the President’s Relief Fund on Wednesday.
Rafat Farid, president and Asad Ali vice-president Pakistani Society in Bradford University respectively said that Pakistani community was highly mobilised to generate funds and donate goods to the earthquake victims and in this regard a campaign was launched in the university.
He expressed that the society of the Bradford University is planning to generate more funds and relief goods to send in the Kashmir and frontier province.
Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Abdul Rauf, Mian Akram Farid were also present on the occasion.
MURREE BREWERY: M.P. Bhandara on Thursday presented a cheque for Rs1.2 million on behalf of Murree Brewery Company to Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz for the president’s relief fund
He informed the prime minister that in addition to this the company will also sponsor the reconstruction of three villages in Buttal, NWFP.
BAANHN BELI: MNA Gul-i-Farkhanda and vice-president of Baanhn Beli Foundation also presented a cheque for Rs53,000 to the prime minister on behalf of the poorest of the poor Hindu and Muslim communities of Nagarparkar, Tharparkar, Sindh.
Despite facing extreme deprivation and hardship, these poor women, men and children have sacrificed their own critical needs to contribute to the relief efforts.
Even though the donation is a small, modest amount, the symbolic importance of this contribution coming from the poorest people makes it a truly major and inspiring symbol of the resolve of the nation to meet the challenges of this crisis.
It is pertinent to mention here that the percentage of Pakistan’s population below the poverty lines is estimated to be about 35 per cent, the percentage of the people in Tharparkar below the poverty line is over 80 per cent.
PDF: Pakistan Development Forum (PDF) has provided large scale relief assistance to the victims of Oct 8 earthquake and is working on a number of projects.
It has established a free living facility in Islamabad for the seriously injured children and their mothers being treated in the capital hospitals.
It has also established an earthquake victim locator website and call centre with Rohani Digest, United Mobiles and Action Based Thought Consulting Firm.
