KARACHI, Nov 3: The Eid celebrations marked the release of as many as 29 convicts from three prisons of the city after they were granted special remission by the President of Pakistan and Sindh chief minister.

Jail authorities told Dawn that six-month special remission was granted to the convicts by the president and three-month remission by the Sindh chief minister on Eidul Fitr.

However, they said, the convicts in the cases of espionage, anti-state activities, sectarianism, rape, kidnapping, terrorism and murder would not have any benefit from the special remission.

The jail authorities said besides the release of 155, 29 convicts, 509 others were also benefited by the remission.

They said the released convicts also included 12 juvenile prisoners, confined in the Prison for Youthful Offenders. As many as 15 other juvenile convicts were also benefited by the remissions.

They said the benefited prisoners also included 24 women.

The authorities said a large number of people came to the prisons to deliver sweets and gifts for the inmates.

As many as 17 prisoners were released from the Central Prison, Karachi..

Besides, 439 convicts at the Central Prison were benefited by the remissions.

The authorities said 20 convicts were released after their remaining sentences were pardoned. They said 70 other convicts were benefited by the remissions.
