KARACHI: Women clinch top positions in HSC commerce

KARACHI, Sept 30: The Board of Intermediate Education, Karachi, on Friday declared the results of HSC Part-II Commerce annual examinations for regular and private candidates. The overall pass percentage in the two categories remained 60.40 and 57.65 respectively.
A study of the examination data revealed that private candidates performed better than regular students.
However, woman candidates remained in a strong position in both regular and private groups. Woman candidates clinched first three positions in the regular category and top two positions in the private category.
According a BIE notification, Ayesha Arif, roll no 433381 of the Institute of Business Education bagged first position in Commerce Regular examination by securing 910 out of 1100 marks.
Second and third positions in the group went to Saba Mohammad Yousuf, roll no 428891, of DHA Degree College for Women and Hira Jawaid, roll no 428980, of Commecs Institute of Business and Emerging Sciences, respectively.
Among private candidates, Asma Bibi, roll no 469676, secured first position as she got the highest marks (846).
Mariam Khan, roll no 470035, and Furqan Shafi, roll no 474305, got second and third positions respectively.
As many as 18,064 candidates, including 6,157 women, appeared in regular examination, out of which 10,910, including 4,432 women, were declared pass. Only two boys and 25 girls were placed in A-1 grade.
In the private group, a total of 6,944 candidates, including 1,426 women, appeared in the examinations, while 4,003, including 718 women, were declared successful. None of the candidates got A-1 grade.
The BIE’s controller of examination, Prof Mohammad Amin Khalid, said that in the commerce (regular and private) examinations, a total of 25,000 students appeared.
The breakdown of successful candidates in the regular and private groups is as follows:
Regular; A-1 grade 27 (including 25 women); A grade 681 (including 469 women), B grade 2,082 (including 1,220 women, C grade 4071 (including 1,720 women), D grade 3,662, (including 937 women) and E grade 387 (including 61 women).
Private; A-1 Nil, A grade 15 (including seven women), B grade 249 (including 77 women), C grade 1,403 (including 258 women), D grade 2,107 (including 340 women), E grade 226 (including 33 women) and pass three women.
A majority of the position holders, who were introduced to newsmen at a ceremony at BIE, expressed the view that Urdu should be given due place as national and official language.
They further stated that students of government colleges who want to excel in their examinations have to bear extra financial burden of getting education at coaching centres.
Position holders also stressed the need for making examination papers more concept based, rather than making them descriptive and rote-oriented. Students also did not appear happy with the repeated electricity failures and traffic congestions in the city.
Ayesha Arif, who secured first position among regular candidates, said more and more libraries be established in the city so that students could visit them and benefit from them during their academic pursuits.
She wants to become a CA in future. Ayesha said students be given religious education simultaneously, and they be encouraged in knowing other languages.
Saba Mohammad Yousuf, the second position holder, said that she would continue her studies in commerce as there was a scope in it.
Hira Jawaid, the third position holder among regular students, said she had started her BBA education at IBA. She further stated that there was a need to improve the standard of education at government colleges.
Chairman of the Board, Prof Iftikhar Zaidi, congratulated the students and parents for their remarkable achievements in examinations.
