WOMEN’S SOCCER: Khadija strikes as Punjab lift title

By Our Sports Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Sep 29: Punjab on Thursday won the inaugural national women’s football championship in a final marred by a Wapda walkout at the Jinnah Stadium.

The 1-0 victory was made possible by Khadija who cashed in on a rebound from a penalty kick in the 54th minute. In the process she hurt the rival keeper that led to Wapda players walking off the pitch.

However, they were persuaded to return by the officials but once the match ended some of the Wapda players attacked the rival players and the organisers again had to step in to restore peace.

A good part of the match was dominated by Wapda who almost went into the lead in the 10th minute only for Khalida Noor to miss what was an easy opportunity.

Punjab defended well and briefly enjoyed the advantage of playing against 10 women after Wapda’s Shabana Kausar was sent off for foul play by the referee.

The championship featured eight teams with Balochistan finishing third.
