KARACHI, Sept 20: The bail application filed by one Mehmood Alam, accused in drug smuggling case, was rejected here on Monday by a division bench of High Court of Sindh (SHC), comprising Justice Ghulam Rabbani and Justice Azizullah M Memon. According to prosecution, ANF officials intercepted a truck on National Highway in the jurisdiction of Shah Lateef Town. The search of the truck led to the recovery of durgs from its cavities.
Mehmood Alam was then arrested for being in possession of the contraband. When the bail application came up for hearing, the bench after hearing the counsel for applicant and state counsel, dismissed the same having no merit.
EOBI restrained: The Sindh High Court on Tuesday restrained the Employee Old-Age Benefit Institution from receiving contribution from a local university.
SHC’s division bench, comprising Justice Ghulam Rabbani and Justice Azizullah M Memon, was hearing a petition by Iqra University Asian Management Institute, seeking quashment of a demand notice by the EOBI.
The contention of the petitioner was that respondents could not claim payment of contribution under its Act and issuance of notice of demand by them was without jurisdiction and illegal. It was submitted that other statutory bodies, Karachi university, NED university, were not required to contribute under the Act. The court was prayed to quash the respondent’s demand notice for recovery and restrain it from recovery through any coercive measures.
The court, restraining the respondents from receiving contribution to university, adjourned the matter till Oct 19.
freezing of accounts: The Sindh High Court on Tuesday adjourned the hearing of a petition filed by Al Akhtar Trust against freezing of its accounts by the government.
The matter could not proceed as petitioner’s counsel was not present. Maulana Mohammad Ibrahim and Maulana Mohammad Mazhar, vice president and chairman financial committee of the trust, moved the SHC against freezing of as many as five bank accounts of the trust.
They submitted that the trust is a registered welfare organization.The accounts of trust were frozen on May 13, 2003.
The ministry of finance, State Bank of Pakistan, HBL and MCB, through their presidents, have been named respondents in the petition.—APP/PPI
