Report on Sonia case presented
ISLAMABAD, Sept 10: The provincial chief secretary and inspector general of police on Saturday presented a report to the Supreme Court on the alleged rape of Sonia Naz by senior Faisalabad police officers. “Yes, I have been intimated that the IG’s report has been filed in the apex court,” Advocate Zulfikar Bhutta, who had requested the court to initiate a suo motu notice on the reported rape, told Dawn.
On Wednesday last, Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry had directed the Punjab chief secretary and inspector general of police to submit within ten days a comprehensive report on the allegations levelled by Sonia Naz against the Faisalabad police.
The inspector general, after receiving the direction from the chief justice, had ordered a police inquiry before which Sonia Naz also appeared to record her statement on Sept 1, 2005.
Ms Naz was arrested from the National Assembly in April last on the orders of Speaker Chaudhry Amir Hussain for infringing parliament where she had come to seek the help of public representatives in searching for her missing husband.
Ms Naz has alleged that she was kept in illegal confinement for a fortnight during which she was raped and tortured by station house officer (SHO) Jaranwala (Faisalabad) Jamshed Chishti on the directives of and in the presence of Abdullah Khalid, superintendent police (SP) investigations.
