LONDON, Sept 3: Former Zimbabwe all-rounder Sean Ervine made 104 for Hampshire in the final of the C and G Trophy against Warwickshire here on Saturday. But his side, who at 206 for two were on course for a score in excess of 300, were bowled out for 290 with Neil Carter taking five for 66.
Hampshire lost their eight wickets for 84 runs as batsmen gave their wickets away.
Left-armer Carter’s figures were the best in the final of this competition since England seamer Matthew Hoggard took five for 65 for Yorkshire against Somerset three years ago.
Warwickshire medium-pacer Jonathan Trott chipped in with three for 35 during an innings where Hampshire’s score was built around a second-wicket stand of 134 between wicket-keeper Nic Pothas and Ervine.
Hampshire openers Pothas and John Crawley made steady progress in good batting conditions after Bears captain Nick Knight won the toss and fielded.
However, their stand was broken on 58 when ex-England batsman Crawley, trying to hook Carter on 29, gloved a catch to wicket-keeper Tony Frost.
Ervine, who made a century in Hampshire’s semi-final win against Yorkshire, was soon into his stride with the left-hander cover-driving medium-pacer and England batsman Ian Bell for four.
Hampshire had advanced to 84 for one off 16 overs when England left-arm spinner Ashley Giles was introduced into the attack and saw Pothas cheekily reverse-sweep his fifth ball for four.
At the half-way stage Hampshire were well-placed at 126 for one with Pothas 39 not out and Ervine, who gave his partner a 16-run head start, 41 not out. Ervine, together with Pothas, shared a century stand in 92 deliveries.
And just to prove he wasn’t taking runs only off the lesser bowlers, Ervine drove South Africa’s Makhaya Ntini straight back down the ground for four.
Pothas fell in similarly fashion to Crawley, gloving a legside catch behind. His 68 came off 99 balls with one six and five fours and at 191 for two off 34 overs Hampshire, who thrashed Warwickshire by an innings with a day to spare on Thursday in the county championship, were still in charge.
Warwickshire then turned the tide by removing dangerman Kevin Pietersen for just five, the hard-hitting batsman well-caught by England team-mate Giles on the boundary off Trott.
Ervine’s single off Trott then took him to a 91-ball hundred with 11 fours.
Australia all-rounder Shane Watson made a 28-ball 25 before he holed out to long-on, where Jim Troughton took a juggling catch, off Trott.
Then, two balls later in the 47th over, 249 for four became 253 for five when Ervine too picked out Troughton.
Come the final over, from Carter, Hampshire captain Shaun Udal went for a first ball nought, caught by Bell as he tried to make certain former Australia all-rounder Andrew Bichel was on strike. But Bichel fell to the same duo.
Chris Tremlett lofted Carter for six over long-on but was run out off the last ball.
