Faisal stakes claim for ‘A’ series

By Our Sports Correspondent

LAHORE, Sept 3: Faisal Iqbal boosted his prospects of being called up for the this month’s series against Australia ‘A’ with an unbeaten century on the second day of the trial game between PCB Whites and PCB Greens at the Qadhafi Stadium on Saturday.

Faisal cracked 19 boundaries during his 175-minute innings to reach 107 as Whites were all out for 305 in response to 314 made by Greens in the first innings. By close of play in the three-day fixture, the Greens were 30 for two in the 45-over-a-side second innings.

But the day belonged to Faisal, the 24-year-old nephew of the legendary Javed Miandad. The right-hander featured in two productive partnerships. Naumanullah (49 with six fours) helped put on 93 runs for the fifth-wicket after the Whites had slumped to 87-4.

Faisal then added 64 for the sixth-wicket with Shahid Yousuf (35 wih five fours) before the final five wickets fell for the addition of just 61 runs.

Test pace bowler Umar Gul took three for 82 while fellow pacemen Mohammad Asif (2-52), Shahid Nazir (2-23) and Yasir Arafat (2-43) were the other wicket-takers.

Mohammad Irshad, who took four wickets in the first innings, clean bowled Ashar Zaidi when the Greens batted for the second time.

Left-arm speedster Najaf Shah compounded Bazid Khan’s misery when he trapped batting great Majid Khan’s son for only two.
