ISLAMABAD, Sept 3: President General Pervez Musharraf on Saturday expressed satisfaction that Pakistan-US relations “have acquired a mutually beneficial strategic dimension”.
The president was speaking to US Senator Tom Harkin.
The president observed that multi-faceted cooperation between the two countries had expanded and appreciated the US support to Pakistan’s socio-economic development.
He underlined the importance of enhancing the scope of bilateral economic relationship.
In this regard, he underscored the importance for the US to promote greater market access for Pakistani products and for higher investments from the US.
The president highlighted the measures being taken to address the problems of terrorism and extremism.
Senator Harkin lauded the support Pakistan was extending to the international community in the fight against terrorism.
He agreed that creation of economic opportunities was a critical factor in meeting the threat of extremism.
He praised the president for the progress made by Pakistan in the economic and social fields.
The Senator noted the important role of Pakistan in the region and supported its efforts to promote regional peace and stability.
The US lawmaker assured the president of the US Congress’s commitment to a long-term, broad-based cooperation with Pakistan and to further deepen bilateral relations, particularly in the areas of education and economy.
Senator Harkin is on a three-day visit to Pakistan. US Ambassador Ryan C. Crocker was present at the meeting.—APP
