Tanvir faces Yasir for trophy

ISLAMABAD, Aug 24: Top seed Tanvir Ashiq and third Seed Yasir Khan will vie for trophy in the boys singles final of 4th Freedom Cup junior tennis championship on Friday.

In the semifinals on Wednesday, Yasir caused upset of the tournament by eliminating second seed Khurram Nazir in a well contested two-set match.

In the other semifinal, Tanveer had to work hard to overcome Omer Babar in a thrilling two sets match.

On Thursday, the boys’ U-13 final will be played at 4:30pm between Yousaf Ajam and Farhan Shahid. The under-17 final between Yasir and Tanvir will be played at 4.00pm on Friday.

Yasir, younger brother of Aqeel Khan, played an outstanding game and built up the wining lead 3-0 by breaking second game of Khurram. Khurram levelled the score 3-3 by breaking fifth game of Yasir by hitting some good shots down the lines.

The score went up to 6-6 as both the players held their serves. Yasir won the set at 7-6 by playing several powerful cross- court shots.

Yasir was in full command in the second set and kept Khurram on the run throughout by forehand and backhand drives. He won the second set easily by breaking second, fourth and sixth games.

Tanveer won the first set 6-2 by breaking first and seventh games of Omer Babar by excellent display of service and combination of forehand and backhand strokes.

The second set was marked with aces, forehand and backhand drives. The score went up to 5-5 as both the players held their serves. Tanveer won the second set 7-5 by breaking 11th game of Omer in which he made two double faults.—APP
