KARACHI: 28 major roads to be washed: Ibad

KARACHI, Aug 11: Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan has said that arrangements are being made for washing the city’s 28 major roads while later this facility will be extended to the level of towns.

He was talking to people during the washing of I.I. Chundrigar Road, here on Wednesday night.

The governor visited various parts of the city from midnight till Fajr and reviewed the development works being carried out during the night hours at Kothari Palace Clifton, Bagh Ibn-i-Qasim and the adjoining coastal recreational places.

Earlier the governor also visited various city areas for over four hours on Wednesday evening and watched the follow up of his directives later in the night.

Reviving the memories of the past, the washing and cleaning of roads has been started on the directives of Dr Ibad, but for the first time in the city’s history, with the help of modern machines.

Earlier the governor performed the inauguration of tractor-like vehicle, which operates these machines, by driving it personally.

The machines, known as “Marathon Mechanical Street Sweepers”, are environment-friendly and very easy to operate.

During an eight-hour operation, the machine can clean an 8km long track of Sharea Faisal consisting of 4-lanes and can clean a 25km long and 7.5 feet wide track in eight hours.

Operated by a single person, the machine has the capacity of doing work equal to work done manually by 80 persons. Besides carrying out cleaning, it can absorb dust, wash the area and cleanse the traffic signals.

The governor saw the washing of I.I. Chundrigar Road and later talking to people said that Karachi was not only the economic hub of Pakistan but also an intellectual, cultural and social hub.

“Its strength is vital for the stability and progress of the entire country”, he emphasized.

Dr Ibad said that the progress achieved in respect of development, the cleaning and other works had nothing to do with the forthcoming elections.

“It is a drive for progress, welfare and initiation of civilized traditions having the basic objective of bringing improvement in the quality of life of the common man”.

If routine of the life continues, people get all the basic facilities, the wheel of industry keeps moving and business keeps rolling, it will certainly benefit every person without any discrimination, he pointed out.

Dr Ibad said that President Musharraf had shown personal interest in equipping this emerging economic hub of the region with modern facilities.

He said that during the present government, the federal government and its organizations had initiated billions of rupees worth of development projects in Karachi.

“Never before the federal organizations ever participated like this in the development of this city”, Dr Ibad said.

During these extensive visits, he was accompanied by Sindh Minister for Planning and Development Shoaib Bukhari, Home Minister Rauf Siddiqi, Adviser on Local Government Waseem Akhtar, Information Adviser Salahuddin Hyder, Caretaker City Government Fazlur Rehman, EDO Works Sarfraz Shah, EDO Parks Liaquat Ali and other officials.—APP
