KARACHI, Aug 11: The traffic police have miserably failed to regulate traffic on busy commercial streets in the metropolis, causing traffic jams. The jams which occur daily can been seen on Zaibunnisa Street, Abdullah Haroon Road, M A Jinnah Road, from Tibet Centre to Merewether Tower, Sharah-i-Iraq, Burnes Road, Shahrah-i-Liaquat and other link roads.
Here violations take place just in front of the traffic police constables who fail to stop drivers from parking vehicles on no parking zones.
On Zaibunnisa Street and Abdullah Haroon Road, haphazard parking of vehicles causes traffic jams.
On Sarwar Shaheed Road which is a one-way road, traffic violators go unpunished.
A visit to various parts of the city showed that traffic jams take place mainly owing to intolerant attitude of drivers buses, minibuses, and coaches who usually do not honour traffic signals.
Complaints of corruption and shady deals have also been received.
A traffic police official said he was placed under suspension twice because he had reported to his DSP and SP about involvement of his section officer in alleged corruption.
A random visit to various places in the city showed that the traffic police hide themselves near a traffic signal to trap motorists, especially motorcyclists, who violate traffic signals.
They are often seen bargaining with motorcyclists, or threatening them if they did not pay illegal gratification.
