KARACHI: Campaigning begins in 11 distts

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Aug 3: With the allotment of election symbols in 11 districts of Sindh, where polling is to be held on August 18, campaigning has taken off in all the constituencies where elections are being held in the first phase. Candidates have also placed orders for handbills and pamphlets for distributing them among their constituents during door-to-door canvassing.

According to sources in the Election Commission, candidates had been instructed to ensure compliance of the code of conduct. In Karachi city district, where polling will be held to elect 178 UCs, 81 candidates have returned unopposed, 65 of them from the minority community, 10 on seats for women peasants/workers, four on Muslim women seats and two on seats of peasants/workers.

In a Dawn report which appeared in Wednesday’s issue (August 3), it was erroneously reported that seven panels of Nazim/Naib Nazim had returned uncontested from UC 3 to UC 9 in Liaquatabad Town. As a matter of fact not a single nazim or naib nazim has retured uncontested, and those who had returned unopposed were all minority members.
