Contempt of court summons against PCB officials

RAWALPINDI, July 29: Civil Judge, Rawalpindi, Rafaqat Ali Gondal, on Friday issued contempt of court summons against officials of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), directing them to submit their reply in his court on Saturday in legal proceedings relating to District Cricket Association, Rawalpindi.

PCB has set Aug 2 as the date for elections in DCA, Rawalpindi, through a letter dated July 25, 2005, under which the PCB election commission was to arrive in Rawalpindi on July 31. Briefing, filing, and hearing of objections against the candidates/clubs were to be held at Pindi Cricket Stadium on Aug 1 and announcement of final list of voters and elections of DCA, Rawalpindi, was to take place the very next day.

Some clubs of the association had obtained restraint order against PCB from the court of Civil Judge, Rawalpindi, in January this year, for holding elections till disposal of appeals against scrutiny decisions. The plaintiff clubs had challenged the decision by a PCB- appointed Scrutiny Committee to declare them ineligible after scrutiny process of RCA clubs in November/December 2004.

The Civil Judge had restrained the PCB in January “from holding the election on 15.01.2005 and fresh schedule of election be announced so that there must be reasonable time between the decision of the appeal (against scrutiny) and election schedule”. The proceedings in that case were to be taken up again on Sept 14.

Those summoned on Saturday include election commissioner of PCB and chairman/members of its Scrutiny Committee.—APP
