KARACHI, July 17: A religious scholar was shot dead and his father, a mufti, was wounded when unknown gunmen opened fire on them in North Nazimabad Sunday night.

Police said Maulana Abdullah, 23, and his father Mufti Muhammad Ahmed Madni, 46, former president of Sipah-i-Sahaba – Karachi division, were passing by the defunct DC Central Office Road, North Nazimabad in their vehicle (EB-0481) when two suspects on a motorcycle opened fire on them.

Police said both the wounded were rushed to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where Maulana Abdullah was pronounced dead on arrival while Mufti Madni was operated upon and was stated to be in a stable condition. He had suffered a bullet wound in his forearm and chin, said hospital sources.

Both scholars were affiliated to the Jamia Madressah Mehmoodia Trust in Bufferzone.

According to initial reports, the suspects used a silencer-fitted pistol, as none of the people present on the spot heard any shots being fired.

The killing came at a time when the police force was posted on the Sharea Faisal in connection with the Prime Minister’s movements in the city.

However, following the incident, police sent from the Nazimabad Town for the VVIP duty were recalled to the town to tackle any law and order situation arising out of the killing.
