Spin trio star for MCC

LONDON, June 14: Spin trio of Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh and Chris Gayle grabbed three wickets each to lift the MCC to a convincing 112-run victory over an International XI in the tsunami appeal one-day match at Lord’s on Tuesday.

International XI were on course to beat the MCC’s 327-7 at the start of the 23rd over before Kumble and Harbhajan sparked a collapse by claiming three wickets for just seven runs.

Kumble had Graeme Smith stumped for 68 to start the slide with the score on 168 for four, then Harbhajan joined in the act by capturing the scalps of Shivnarine Chanderpaul (2) and Chris Cairns (1).

Rahul Dravid became Harbhajan’s third victim before Gayle mopped up the tail to skittle out Lara’s side for just 215 in the 35th over.

Earlier, Andy Flower and Kumar Sangakkara launched a late assault to guide the MCC to 327 for seven from 50 overs.

Flower, coming in at number six, ripped the International team’s bowling apart to score 55 in just 40 deliveries as captain Lara struggled to stem the MCC’s run flow.

With Lara using 10 bowlers to try to slow the run flow in a match being played in aid of the Decr 26 tsunami victims, Flower and Sangakkara unleashed an array of shots in making 46 off 36 balls to help the MCC past 300 in the 48th over.

Stephen Fleming led from the front with a quickfire 62, while Jacques Kallis played a more cautious supporting role before he too fell for 62.
