KARACHI, June 6: City Nazim Niamatullah Khan has said that the city government has included education and health sectors in the list of its priorities as no nation can achieve progress without strengthening the two sectors. He was speaking as chief guest at the inauguration of the second phase of the Karachi Medical and Dental College building here on Monday.
The building is being constructed at a cost of Rs132 million and would have sections of pathology, chemistry, pharmacology, physiology, anatomy, dentistry, community medicine, etc.
Niamatullah Khan pointed out that the city government had allocated 31 per cent of the total budget to education and 19 per cent to health sector.
These allocations, he said, appeared much higher than those made in the federal and provincial budgets.
He said that before the introduction of the devolution plan, condition of many schools was so bad that they did not have even doors and windows.
Under the city government’s special measures and the organized programmes aimed at encouraging of teaching community and students, the standard of education at all schools was improved.
He also made mention of the establishment of the city’s second cardiac hospital in public sector, and said it would cater to the needs of poor and lower-middle class. He said that 10 chest pain centres were also being set up in different areas so that timely medical aid to ailing people was ensured.
Principal of the college Saadia Karim, Vice-Principal Kazi Javed and Sajjad Dara also spoke.—APP
