Lucky Winner wins feature event

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, May 22: Five-year-old chestnut horse, Lucky Winner, defied top weight handicap when winning the feature event during the Lahore Summer Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday. Ridden by the riding boy, M. Alam, Lucky Winner carrying nine stone seven pounds heavy impost, came from behind and overtook front runner Mumtaz Mahal and Young Emperor to win by a length from onrushing Red Rock.

Mumtaz Mahal finished third, half a length further back while Young Emperor lost stamina to hardly manage an edge on the board.

The victory of Lucky Winner gave riding boy A. Alam his first win of the season. In all, six ran for the Pak Pattan Plate, class IV division I handicap race contested over 1300 metres.

This was the sixth race of the day.

In the supporting and fifth event, the Pak Pattan Plate class IV division II gone over 1300 metres dark-bay filly, Who Dares triumphed. She beat Empire Maker by a length and a quarter. My On Job and Fidel Castro completed the frame among ten runners.

Trained privately by Mian Abdul Majeed, Who Dares was piloted by M. Hanif. Ace jockey, Shahid Rehman, celebrated his return to Lahore Racecourse from London in a terrific way.

He brought home three winners in a row, winning the first three races.

He rode home Ghoray Wah, Penalty Corner and Safe And Sound in the first, second and third race, earning for himself a hat trick of wins.

With Shahid’s return to the saddle, came an end to the monopoly of some riders, who cashed his absence and got many a rides each.
