Three more golds for Raheela

LAHORE, May 14: Raheela Bano continued her winning streak as she claimed three more gold medals, enabling defending champions Wapda to take an unbeatable aggregate eight gold medals on the penultimate day of the national women cycling championships at the National Velodrome on Saturday. Two more finals will be held on Sunday, the last day of the competition.

Raheela, who won three golds on the first day and played a major role in winning fourth gold for Wapda in a team event repeated almost the same performance on the second day.

She clocked seven minutes 23.73 seconds to win five km time trial held around the Punjab Stadium. Her team-mate Ayesha Amin and Aneela Ayub of Sui Gas came second and third, respectively.

Raheela notched up her fifth gold medal when she won the 10kms road scratch clocking 13 minutes 27.87 seconds. Ayesha Amin and Ghazala Abbas also of Wapda bagged the silver and bronze medal.

Raheela clocked nine minutes 33.50 seconds to win third gold in the elimination race. Ayesha Amin was the runner-up while Irum got the first bronze medal for Punjab.

Hina Qasmi of Punjab was injured in the elimination race and had to receive five stitches. Her cycle was pushed from behind by other participants and she failed to control and fell on the floor.

The Pakistan Cycling Federation secretary Idris Haider Khawaja announced an amount of Rs 10,000 for Hina’s treatment. Wapda won the fourth gold medal of the day, winning the 1000m team sprint.

The team comprising Raheela, Ayesha and Misbah achieved a timing of one minute 6.82 seconds. The Sui Gas team (Aneela Ayub, Ayesha, Madhiya) was second while Railways came in third.

Results: Five kms time trial: Raheela Bano (Wapda) seven min 23.73sec;

Ayesha Amin (Wapda); Aneela Ayub (Sui Gas). 10Kms road scratch race: Raheela Bano (Wapda) 13 min 27.87 sec;

Ayesha Amin (Wapda); Ghazal Abbas (Wapda). Elimination race: Raheela Bano (Wapda) nine min 33.50sec; Ayesha Amin (Wapda), Irum (Punjab).

1000m team sprint: Wapda (Raheela Bano, Ayesha Amin, Misbah) one min 6.82secs; Sui Gas (Aneela Ayub, Ayesha, Madhiya); Railways (Nusrat, Fauzia), Sukhan).

Sunday’s fixture: Three Kms team sprint. One Km team sprint.
