Five killed as wagon rams into truck

SAHIWAL, May 14: Five people were killed and 10 others received injuries, four of them serious, on Saturday in an accident on Sahiwal-Arifwala Road near Chak 100/9-L. A wagon, coming from Arifwala at high speed, collided head-on with a truck (Karachi-E-7548). Wagon driver Barish Ali, Shafiq Mujahid of Arifwala, Nargis (25) of Chak 25/EB, Ahmed Iqbal of Chak 147/EB and an unidentified man died instantly. Police also recovered Rs48,000 from the pocket of deceased Shafique Mujahid. The condition of four passengers — Hina Khalid (16), Akhtar Raza, Javed and an unidentified person was said to be serious at the local DHQ Hospital. While the six injured were allowed to go after first aid. However, the truck driver managed to escape from the scene.

Dera Rahim police have registered a case.

INAUGURATED: Central Communication Region, Lahore, general manager Rana Shah Muhammad inaugurated a newly-established directorate office here on Saturday.

The post of director has been created to handle the areas of Sahiwal, Pakpattan and Okara. The newly-appointed director, Pervez Iqbal Qureshi, has assumed the charge.

Speaking on the occasion, GM Shah Muhammad disclosed that the PTCL would add 5,000 more lines in telephone exchanges of Sahiwal, Arifwala, Pakpattan and Okara.

He also warned PTCL officers of strict action if the complaints regarding defective telephones were not redressed within 24 hours.

LOOTED: Three masked bandits looted the house of a showroom owner in Jahaz Ground here on Saturday.

Armed bandits barged into the house, held inmates hostage and then locked them in a room. Later, they fled after scooping Rs36,000 in cash, prize bonds valuing Rs40,000 and ornaments worth Rs370,000.
