Law ministry clarification

ISLAMABAD, April 29: The law ministry has clarified a news report regarding judges’ appointment appearing in the Friday issue of newspapers. A ministry spokesman said the law secretary had informed the members of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) that there was a constitutional process for the appointment of judges in superior courts.

According to the process, the chief justices of high courts make recommendations which go to the chief justice of Pakistan through governors of the provinces concerned. The chief justice of Pakistan countersigns the recommendations. The president of Pakistan appoints the judges according to the lists.

The law secretary stated that on inquiry from members of the committee he had appeared before the PAC only for the clarification of accounts.

The spokesman said that a list had been sent by the Sindh High Court, which was sent back to the SHC by the chief justice of Pakistan for consideration.
