DHAKA: The attorney general of Bangladesh resigned on Thursday on health grounds, according to a statement. But sources in the ruling BNP and the higher judiciary said Hassan Arif had tendered resignation because of differences with top party leaders over the last one year.
According to sources in the government, Mr Arif fell into a row with the government in May 2003 when he had to file a petition for leave to appeal against the High Court’s verdict that directed the government to amend provisions of arrest without warrant and police remand.
