KARACHI: Police whisk away JI’s city chief

KARACHI, April 23: Personnel of a law-enforcement agency in civvies, escorted by police mobiles, on Saturday evening arrested Amir of Jamaat-i-Islami, Karachi, Dr Mairajul Huda Siddiqui and took him to some unknown destination, eyewitnesses and a JI spokesman claimed.

According to some eyewitnesses, Dr Siddiqui emerged from the JI office, Idara Noor-i-Haq to offer Asr prayers and was on his way to the nearby mosque when some people in a car asked him to get into the vehicle, escorted by two police mobiles.

A JI spokesman confirmed the reported arrest but said it could not be ascertained where Mr Siddiqui had been taken to. “Yes, he has been arrested as this is evident from the fact that the car which he had been forced into had been escorted by two police mobiles,” he said, adding that the JI and MMA would strongly protest against the provincial government’s act.

“We had warned that if Dr Siddiqui, who is not wanted in any case, is arrested again, we will besiege the Governor’s House… and we are committed to our announcement,” he asserted.

However, DIG Operations Mushtaq Shah and TPO Jamshed Town Capt (r) Tahir Naveed told PPI that they were not aware of any such arrest.

“We are fair people, and if anything happens, we don’t need to keep it secret,” they maintained.—PPI
