UNITED NATIONS, April 18: UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has expressed the hope that the member states will be galvanized by urgency to take steps to deal with poverty, terrorism and the spread of deadly weapons and diseases.

Inaugurating a special meeting of UN Economic and Social Council attended by world’s finance ministers and top officials of Bretton Woods institutions, he noted that Sept summit to review progress since the Millennium Declaration would be the moment to take those decisions.

He said his comprehensive agenda had set goals that had to be agreed through negotiations among member states in a spirit of give and take.

Pakistan Ambassador Munir Akram in his statement said the meeting should make useful contribution to the review of the implementation of the agreed development goals, including MDGs, at the September summit.
