Rank outsider Brummel captures Neelum Cup

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, April 17: Rank outsider, three-year-old bay English colt, Brummell, put up a much improved performance, when winning the Neelum Cup run over 1600m during the Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday. This colt from English sire, Polish Precedent out-of-Fashion, Brummell, beat fancied Laser Lass by over seven lengths. English filly Tortuette finished third, half-a-length behind while Dixie Queen finished fourth about three lengths further behind among only six runners. Owned by Mian Mohammed Ashraf and trained privately by Rashid Latif, the winner was piloted home by the riding boy Faisal Tahir.

He clocked one min 37 4/5 secs over the distance. Earlier in the second race three-year-old bay colt, Fidel Castro ran away with the Spring Cup contested over the sprinting distance of 1200m. He beat Aya Chandiwala by over three lengths. Squash Ball finished third, three-fourth of length further back while Mera Chandiwala completed the board among eight runners.

This was the second successive win of this progeny of Cry For The Clown out-of-Zahid Princess, Fidel Castro, who was bred at the Arbab Stud Farms. Only two firm favourites obliged the punters when a small card of six races was gone through.

The favourites to oblige the punters were 40 to 100 Fidel Castro and 70 to 100 Owais Prince.

The other four events were bagged by those available at long odds. As forecast the sixth and last event of the day turned out to be a free for all. In this event four contestants finished within the distance of about one lengths. So close was the finish that the magic eye of the camera separated them all.

The race was won by a dark horse Double Deal, who beat fancied Fly Over Home, who failed to fly home by a short-head. Daring Bulbul finished a close third after nosing out Lucky Credit Queen to fourth position.
