PU girls dominate athletics

ISLAMABAD, April 15: Punjab University girls dominated the athletics competitions on Friday at the second University Games picking up five gold medals. Sumaira Tayyaba set the tone for the day by claiming the 100m hurdles gold clocking 17.7 seconds to finish ahead of Farzana Mughal of Karachi University and her own team-mate Nabila Raza.

Raheela took the high jump honours, clearing 1.37m to give Punjab another gold medal while Amina Khalid was the winner in the 400m final finishing in a time of 63.7 sec. The silver in this event also went to Punjab with Sumaira clocking 71.7 sec. Ambreen Tabassum of Karachi University captured the bronze.

It was also a one-two finish for Punjab University in the discus throw with Iffat Bano going 28.11m for the gold and Lubna 23.04 to bag the silver. Sadia Khalid of University of Peshawar had to be content with a bronze.

The Punjab runners then rounded off a rewarding day by landing the 4x100 relay gold crossing the finish in 54.4 sec followed by Karachi University (58.8 sec) and University of Sindh (59.0).

There was also significant success for Punjab on the tennis courts where their players edged Bahauddin Zakariya University Multan 2-1 in the men’s team final while their women’s team did the same with a 2-0 defeat of Karachi University.

Punjab University boxers were impressive too, winning the championship after having collected 76 points with four gold, as many silver and two bronze medals.

Sindh University, Jamshoro who had 72 points were second while Government College University Lahore came in third with 29 points.

Tennis (men’s team event final): Punjab Univesity bt Bahauddin Zakariya University 2-1 (Masood Ahmed bt Imran Rasool 6-0, 6-0; Fawad Pirzada bt Shahryar Arif 0-6, 6-4, 6-0; Afnan-Masood bt Imran Rasool-Fawad Pirzada 6-1, 6-3

Men’s individual semifinals: Sarmad H. (Islamia) bt Noman Yahya (Bahria); Saad Baloch (Mehran Uni) bt Samad Baloch (NUST) 6-4, 7- 5.

Ladies team event final: Punjab Univesity bt Karachi University 2-0 (Nabia Haq bt Naima Mukhtar 6-0, 6-3; Sana Khan bt Shakeela 7-5, 6-2.

Third place playoff: LCWU bt Bahauddin Zakariya University 2-0 (Saira Zeb bt Sumera Parveen 6-2, 6-1; Amna Butt bt Anum Munir 6-0, 6-2.

Boxing: 48kg: Umair Hussain (University of Sindh Jamshoro, gold); Jamshed Ashraf (Punjab University , silver); Hafiz M. Ilyas (Govt College University Lahore, bronze).
