PESHAWAR, April 15: Inspector-General (prisons) Azam Khan on Friday announced a two-month remission in sentence for all prisoners in the central jail here on the directive of Peshawar District and Sessions Judge Shahjehan Akhundzada.

The immediate beneficiary will be about 70 prisoners who would complete their prison-term with the two-month remission.

The district and sessions judge visited the jail on Friday. He also ordered the release of 15 prisoners charged in petty cases.

Judge Akhundzada expressed reservations over the quality of food served to the prisoners and overall sanitation situation.

He directed the prison authorities to improve the quality of food.

The judge also met prisoners and inquired from them about the problems they faced. He asked them to send him applications about any of the problems they were facing in the jail.

He also issued orders on some of the applications on the spot.

He inquired about the cases of prisoners and about delay in filing of cases before the court for their trials.

Three days ago PHC Chief Justice Tariq Pervez had also visited the jail and had sought list of those convicted prisoners whose appeals had not been fixed for hearing for two years. Similarly, the chief justice had also inquired about prisoners whose cases have not been put in the court for trial for last one year.
