Protection of environment stressed

PESHAWAR, April 11: The NWFP Minister for Environment, Mr Shahraz Khan, has said the government is considering introducing environment as a subject in colleges and universities. An announcement to this effect was expected soon, he said. The government had also decided to invite Ulema to join campaigns for tree planta-tion and other environmental matters, said a handout on Sunday.

The minister was addressing a function after visiting Zarif Khan Foundation here.

He was briefed about projects and activities of the organization in wildlife preservation, education, training and eco-tourism.

Malik Mumtaz, conservator of wildlife, Abid Zareef Khan, chairman of ZKF, and two Australian experts, Patricia Kennedy and Brother Walter, also attended the function.

Shahraz Khan said wildlife greatly contributed in enhancing nature’s beauty and checking environmental degradation.

He offered services of his department in research and training activities.

The minister lauded role of the ZKF in promoting research and training in wildlife and eco-tourism.

He assured the foundation of government support in implementing the Malakand Bio-diversity Project launched by the foundation in collaboration with the UNDP.

Later Shahraz Khan gave certificates to the volunteers and students for making the Malakand Bio-diversity Project a success.
