Son withdraws FIR in former police chief’s murder case

By Shafiq Ahmad

PESHAWAR, April 10: The complainant in case relating to the murder of a former inspector general of police (IGP) has withdrawn his FIR against 16 nominated accused and asked the police to find out real culprits. Talking to Dawn from his residence, Sibghatullah Tareen, the younger son of slain ex-IGP Northern Areas Sakhiullah Tareen, said that his elder brother Safiullah Tareen who was also injured in the ambush and had lodged the FIR, had formally asked the police that he wanted to withdraw the case.

Sakhiullah Tareen and four police personnel were killed in an ambush near Gilgit on March 23. The deceased official’s son, Safiullah Tareen and daughter-in-law were also critically injured in the ambush.

“Northern Areas police should investigate the case from different angles and net the real culprits involved in the killing of my father and four others,” Sibghatullah said.

There was no pressure either from police or from any religious groups for withdrawal of the case, he said and added that his elder brother had nominated 16 persons in the FIR but now he was of opinion that it was unjust to nominate anyone as he did not know the attackers. He said Northern Areas, particularly Gilgit, had witnessed many sectarian killings in the past few months and the security situation was still unsatisfactory in the area.

dacoity bid foild: A family living in Daudzai area foiled a robbery attempt by six armed men after an encounter with them.

Five of the culprits fled but the police later arrested four of them from different areas of the city on Sunday, police said.

Speaking at a press conference at Police Headquarters here, Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Habib-ur-Rehman said that six armed men enter the house of Haji Zazai, a cloth trader, in Daudzai area.

Haji Zazai resisted their move but was injured by them, he said. Meanwhile other family members pulled outs guns and started firing on the outlaws. They injured and overpowered one of them while his accomplices fled from the scene.

The injured robber and house owner Haji Zazai were admitted to the Lady Reading Hospital. The police interrogated the robber who disclosed hideouts of his accomplices, Habib-ur-Rehman said and added that the police took timely action and arrested his four accomplices from different localities of the city, while one accused Javed alias Tariq had not been arrested yet.

Those arrested include three Afghan nationals— Abdullah, a resident of Thal, Sher Zaman, a resident of Thal and Zabihullah, a resident of Hasan Ghari— and two locals including Mahboob, a resident of South Waziristan Agency and Abdul Hameed, a resident of Faqirabad.

The police also recovered three Kalashnikovs, two pistols and four hand grenades from their possession.

The CCPO said that the gang was very active in the city and their arrest would help the police nab other gangs.

PASTOR’S MURDER: While responding to a question about murder of Pastor Simpson, the CCPO said that the police were investigating the case on different lines — hate crime or honour killing — and real culprits would be arrested soon.

He said the city police had already arrested Samina and her brother-in-law on the charges of killing the pastor and his driver Daniel. He claimed that the pastor’s young brother Aamir had promised to marry Samina and both had eloped to Lahore last month.

However, according to sources Aamir had escaped from the city and reportedly gone to Karachi after kidnapping of Baber Simpson and his driver.
