Khalid keeps bankers’ hopes alive for a semifinal spot

By Our Sports Reporter

KARACHI, April 8: Former Pakistan Under-19 skipper Khalid Latif scored a match-winning century on Friday to keep Allied Bank still in reckoning for a semifinal spot from Pool ‘A’ of the Patron’s Cup.

Khalid scored 124 to set up a four-wicket victory over PTCL in a high-scoring match at the National Stadium. The right-hander’s 144-ball knock was laced with 13 fours and three sixes.

Allied Bank, in fact, overcame a shaky start as they reduced to 48 for three in the 10th over after being a daunting target of 295. But Khalid and Manzoor Akhtar, who played in several ODIs in the late 1990s, came together in a vital fourth-wicket stand of 131 inside 20 overs to revive victory hopes.

Manzoor struck nine boundaries in making 64 off 48 balls before falling to PTCL skipper Mohammad Hussain. Skipper Ijaz Ahmed Jr made a 41-ball 33 in another useful stand of 71 with Khalid.

The bankers were ultimately home in the 48th over.

Earlier, Shahzad Malik (71 off 76 balls, six fours), Mohammad Fayyaz (63 off 71 balls, five fours and three sixes) and Hussain (49 not out off 46 balls) were mainly responsible for taking PTCL to 294 for six after Allied Bank asked them to bat first.

There is a four-way fight for the remaining semifinal place from this pool as PTCL, Allied Bank, ZTBL and Wapda have eight points apiece as they head into Sunday’s last-round fixtures.
