Two constables among four killed in encounter: Accused freed by aides

GUJRANWALA, April 7: Two constables and an accused were shot dead when armed men targeted police to get released a notorious criminal, who was brought along with others to the district courts for hearing on Thursday. One of the assailants was also killed in an exchange of fire while the three other accused, who were involved in different cases, escaped police custody.
According to reports, Model Town police had arrested Naeem Butt, Muhammad Javed, Raheel Shah and Muhammad Amir on various charges and sent them to jail.
On Thursday, the police were escorting them to the district courts for hearing. Hardly had they reached courts, Naeem’s accomplices opened fire on the police as a result of which constables, Muhammad Shafiq and Abdul Ghafoor, and accused Muhammad Amir died on the spot.
Another policeman retaliated and shot dead one of the assailants, who was identified as Ilyas. The other attackers and the three accused fled the scene.
Later, DPO Dr Arif Mushtaq, along with other senior police officials, reached the courts and gleaned facts about the incident, and ordered immediate arrest of the absconders.
The DPO constituted two teams one of which set up pickets in the city, but failed to find any clue to the culprits till last reports came in.
Later, Civil Lines police registered a case against eight people, including Naeem’s brother Zafar Butt and deceased constable Abdul Ghafoor, who was found out to be one of the accomplices.
Initial investigation revealed that Ghaffor had promised Naeem to facilitate his release. He was in plainclothes at the time of the incident.

As many as four armed bandits, in the guise of passengers, held hostage the driver and other passengers of a Sheikhupura-bound wagon. They snatched cash, gold jewellry and mobile phones worth Rs100,000 from the commuters and escaped. Police have registered a case against unidentified men and are investigating.
