LAHORE, April 7: The World Health Day passed quietly in the city as the health department did not show any concern by organizing any function on Thursday. The World Health Organization (WHO) had this year selected “Make every mother and child count” theme for the day. However, Punjab WHO operations officer Ismatullah Chaudhry made an appearance at the communication planning workshop for routine immunization at a local hotel and informed the health EDOs and other officials that the WHD was being observed on Thursday.

He said the aim of the day was to create momentum that compels governments, the international community, civil society and individuals to take action to improve the health and well-being of mothers and children. He said more concerted efforts needed to help save lives of millions of mothers and children, who were dying each year during child birth and early childhood.

He said overall message for the WHD was a hope for all mothers and children. He said the future would be healthier and more productive for all societies, “if we act now to make every mother and child count.”

Mr Chaudhry also distributed a booklet carrying the WHD messages from WHO director-general Dr Lee Jong-wook and WHO Family and Community Health Cluster assistant DG Joy Phumtaphi.

Meanwhile, an NGO, Punjab Anti-TB Association organized a function to observe the Health Day.

The Lahore General Hospital had also held a function in connection with the day on Wednesday.
