UN condemns Srinagar attack

UNITED NATIONS, April 6: Condemning the attack on the housing complex for passengers of the Kashmir bus service, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan expressed the hope that the bus service would proceed as planned ?followed by substantive agreements on all outstanding issues, including the issue of Jammu and Kashmir?. In a statement, Mr Annan observed: ?The introduction of this landmark bus service is a tangible achievement of the composite dialogue between India and Pakistan.?

Mr Annan noted that the beneficiaries of the proposed bus service would be the people of Kashmir, who had been divided for decades and traumatized by violence

The UN Chief commended ?the spirit of compromise demonstrated by both India and Pakistan in the course of negotiating this important confidence building measure?.

He expressed the hope that the bus service would begin as planned.
