GEORGETOWN, April 5: Shivnarine Chanderpaul was given a vote of confidence after leading West Indies to a draw in the opening Test against South Africa when he was appointed captain for the remainder of the series and the forthcoming series against Pakistan.

The 30-year-old left-hand batsman keeps out former captain Brian Lara and three others whose personal endorsements of a rival sponsor kept them out of the first Test.

Former West Indies batsman Michael ‘Joey’ Carew, the convenor of selectors, said he and his panel were pleased with the team’s overall performance in the first Test and expected the team to grow from strength to strength.

Lara, fellow batsmen Ramnaresh Sarwan and Chris Gayle, as well as all-rounder Dwayne Bravo have all been named in a 12-man squad for the second Test at Port-of-Spain’s Queen’s Park Oval, beginning on Friday.

The sponsorship row saw Lara, Sarwan, Gayle, Bravo and three others sign personal endorsement contracts with previous team sponsor Cable & Wireless that the West Indies Cricket Board ruled was in contravention of its agreement with current sponsor and telecom rival Digicel.
