South Africa forced to follow on

GEORGETOWN, April 3: South Africa were forced to follow on after being dismissed for 188 on the fourth day of the first Test against West Indies on Sunday.Trailing the hosts by 355 runs after the first innings, the South African’s reached lunch on four without loss. A.B. de Villiers was unbeaten on three, while Graeme Smith was batting on one.

Resuming on their overnight score of 130 for six, South Africa added 58 runs before West Indian pace trio of Pedro Collins, Daren Powell and Reon King mopped up the tail to finish with three wickets apiece.

South Africa slipped to 158 for seven when Nicky Boje was bowled off his pads by a straightening delivery from King.

Boje batted solidly for his 34 and his dismissal ended a 63-run stand with Mark Boucher.

Makhaya Ntini hit lofted fours through mid-wicket and mid-off before being trapped in front for eight by an inswinger from Powell.

South Africa’s last genuine hope of reaching the follow on target disappeared when Boucher’s attempt at driving a wide delivery from Collins was caught at first slip by Shivnarine Chanderpaul.

Boucher scored a defiant 41 off 158 balls with five fours.

The innings ended when Charl Langeveldt drove a full toss from occasional off-spinner Narsingh Deonarine only to be caught by Ryan Hinds at short extra cover for 10.

De Villiers and Smith successfully negotiated the three overs that were bowled before lunch in South Africa’s second innings.

On Saturday, the West Indies fast bowlers put the skids under South Africa as the tourists were left tottering on 130 for six when bad light stopped play eight overs early.

At the close Boucher was unbeaten on 32 and Boje was batting on 21.

Play began almost three hours later than scheduled because of overnight rain.

During the afternoon session, the South Africans had collapsed to 44 for four after losing three wickets in five deliveries.

Smith started the slide when he edged a swinging delivery from Collins to wicket-keeper Courtney Browne for two.

Powell dismissed Jacques Rudolph first ball after Ryan Hinds took a fine catch at third slip.

South Africa were left reeling on 16 for three just two balls later when Jacques Kallis dragged a delivery from Powell on to his stumps. He was out without scoring.

De Villiers and Herschelle Gibbs kept the bowlers at bay until the seventh over, when Collins trapped Gibbs in front for five with a delivery that pitched in line with leg stump and angled across the right-hander.

De Villiers added 41 runs with Boucher in a stand that lasted 14 overs before he fell to King off an inside edge.

De Villiers hit seven fours in his 41.

Andrew Hall failed to withstand the attack for long as he fell for two from a pull shot off King which looped to Collins at mid-on.
