Super Conqueror lifts main event in common canter

By Ian Fyfe

KARACHI, April 3: Super Conqueror a bay three-year-old colt from Canon Fall out of Dandy Lion, won the main event at the Winter Gymkhana Race Meeting beating the thoroughbred chestnut filly Fantasia in a common canter on Sunday afternoon at the Karachi Racecourse. With only seven runners contending in the last event going over six furlongs, Princess J.T.M. took a flying start, followed by Fantasia and Super Conqueror. Soon Fantasia piloted by jockey Arshad took over the running but nearing the turn, champion jockey M. Nasir urged his mount on and Super Conqueror obliged.

Turning for home, Super Conqueror moved comfortably in front with Fantasia finishing second four lengths behind, followed by Princess J.T.M. a further seven lengths adrift.

However, the running of Edward Chou’s chestnut horse Real Gift ridden by Arif Nazir in this race left much to be desired. After a bad start, Real Gift never improved at all and trailed in the far distance in fifth place.

Not satisfied with his handling of Real Gift, The Administrator Fakir Syed Aitzaz Uddin without a moment’s hesitation fined the rider Arif Nazir Rs.5000 and warned him severely for the future.

In a very hot and humid afternoon horse racing was good if not at its best.

Young Fahim Karim stole the riding honours with a splendid double astride Safeena-e-Arab in the fifth event going over the sprinting distance of five furlongs. Noor-e-Arab after leading a race for awhile, finished second with Charming Girl and Issey Niyke completing the frame. Not satisfied with this success, Fahim shone once more in the saddle in the seventh event, riding home the thoroughbred bay mare Penny to an arm-chair victory. The grey horse Al Jarrar finished second in the far distance and 10 lengths further down the line came Mrs. Shamim Ara Begum’s game bay mare Guarantee.

Also sharing in the afternoon’s glory was Fahim’s dad, trainer Mohammed Rafiq Karim, who also had a brace of winners through Ever So Clever and Penny in the sixth and seventh events respectively.

The first event on the afternoon’s card was a complete upset when the chestnut gelding Afzaal Prince with teenager Zulfiqar Ali aboard, squeezed in from the inside of the rails to beat the hot favourite Taneez in a photo-finish. The magic eye of the camera awarded the race to Afzaal Prince by a head.

After finishing a bad fourth last time out, the chestnut horse Lucky Five partnered by Ghous Bux made a marked improvement and galloped to victory in the next event beating Khush Nazar by eight lengths. Kinjehar grabbed the third spot from the favourite Azam The Great.

Ultimate Victory after several unsuccessful appearances, finally hit the winning trail beating Ladla and Choti Dunya, after fourth placed Sea Biscuit led the field for most part of the race in the third.

Another runner that made amends for his last two futile outings was the bay horse Snake River. This time partnered by M. Kashif, the bay horse owned and trained by Yaqoob Butt, strode home to victory ahead of the dark bay filly Clapping, while clocking 1 minute 5 1/5 seconds over the five furlong journey, with the firm favourite Trust Me, a disappointing third.

The chestnut colt Ever So Clever trained by Mohammad Rafiq Karim and having jockey Arshad in the saddle, ended the pretensions of the favourite bay filly Casual Look, finishing a bad third behind second placed Sarazen, ridden by Faisal Khan, who only last night returned home after completing a stint in England. The next race meeting is scheduled for Sunday April 10.
