Consolation win for Pakistan in U-19 ODI

By Our Sports Reporter

KARACHI, April 3: In a high-scoring thriller, Pakistan scored a consolation three-wicket win in the inconsequential third Under-19 ‘One-day International’ against Sri Lanka at the National Stadium on Sunday. Chasing a daunting 311, Pakistan reached their target with just two balls to spare. Arsalan Anwar took the home team to victory with a little cameo by striking 22 off 16 balls, including two boundaries.

Pakistan, who lost the first two matches at Multan and Lahore, were well served by left-handers Nasir Jamshed (38 off 29 balls, five fours and one six), Fayyaz Ahmed 54 off 43 balls, seven fours) and Fawad Alam (43 off 56 balls, two fours).

Other batsmen to make impact for the hosts were wicket-keeper Abid Ali (54 off 67 balls, nine fours), skipper Jahangir Mirza (48 off 34 balls, seven fours) and Nawaz Sardar (26 off 20 balls, three fours).

Earlier, centuries by left-handed opening batsman Upul Tharanga and Chamara Kapugedera spurred Sri Lanka to an imposing 310 for eight in the 50 overs after skipper Harsha Vithana elected to bat first on a superb batting track.

The consistent Tharanga completed a fine tour with a splendid 104 off 133 balls with the help of eight boundaries. The third-wicket stand between Tharanga and Kapugedera yielded 221.

Kapugedera was more belligerent as he blasted his way to a 120-ball 131, a knock that was laced with 15 fours and three sixes.
