Drivers refuse to go by rules

Published April 2, 2013

FAISALABAD, April 1: The recent campaign launched by the traffic police to check violation of rules by the drivers of public transports and create a sense of responsibility among them has failed to deliver. During the campaign, which was launched with the financial assistance of industrialists during the last week, the traffic police forced the public transport drivers to obey the rules. However, traffic snarls are still a familiar sight on major arteries and roads in the district mainly because of unchanged attitude of the drivers.

The drivers of commercial vehicles fearlessly violate the rules, as they grease the palms of the traffic police functionaries. The officials on duty seem helpless to control violations at Abdullahpur, railway station and Jhang Bazaar intersections, and on the Circular Road and the Narwala Road.

Moreover, the drivers of public transport drive recklessly that can be judged from the fact that 21 people had lost their lives in road accidents here in the last four days. Nor is there any check on over-speeding and overloading by buses and wagons. People still sit atop buses and coaches on intra- and inter-city routes without visualizing its repercussions.

Errant drivers continue to use pressure horns despite a ban imposed on them by the government. Some of the government vehicles are also flagrantly violating the ban. A mushroom growth of wagon stands in populous areas of the district is yet another violation and a major factor behind traffic jams.
