PESHAWAR: ‘Discontinuity of political process hit female rights’

By Sadia Qasim Shah

PESHAWAR, March 14: Discontinuity of political process in the country has kept women deprived of their rights and women are faced with gender discrimination and injustice, says I.A. Rehman, a former chairperson of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan.

Speaking at a ceremony held here on Monday at the completion of one-year graduate Resource Development Programme (RDP) under the auspices of the South Asia Partnership (SAP), Mr Rehman said political process had been disrupted many times by dictators resulting in gross violation of human rights.

“The political process has almost been stopped by fanatics and dictators,” said the former HRCP chief.

He warned that if the current practice continued and democratic elements were curbed, people would feel alienated like those in South Waziristan, Sibbi and Sui.

Mohammad Tehseen, the chief executive of SAP, asked the participants to make use of the knowledge and skills they had learnt during the programme. He said SAP was working to strengthen people in the four provinces so that they could fight for their rights. No woman should face discrimination on the basis of gender, he observed.
