KARACHI: No decision taken yet to replace nazims: Imtiaz

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Feb 3: Sindh Minister for Political Affairs Imtiaz Ahmad Shaikh has said that no decision had been taken, so far, on appointment of administrators to replace Nazims before the coming local bodies' elections for the sake of transparency and holding of fair elections.

Mr Sheikh made this observation in response to questions during his press conference on Thursday where he highlighted the details of the PML membership drive being launched on Friday throughout the country.

He said that the PML government has always protected the interests of Sindh by taking an upright stand on all issues whether pertaining to water or construction of Kala bagh Dam.

"The people who had criticized the 1991 water accord, now consider it the best, and they stand for its implementation". Mr Shaikh made this observation in response to questions during his press conference on Thursday where he highlighted the details of the PML membership drive being launched on Friday throughout the country.

He welcomed President Musharraf's visit to Sindh to dispel reservations and apprehensions of the people regarding construction of Kalabagh Dam. He said the Sindh government stands by a resolution adopted on the issue by the Sindh Assembly unanimously and conveyed it to the President who himself had pledged that no decision would be taken against the interests of Sindh and the decision to construct Kala Bagh Dam would be taken with consensus.

Mr Shaikh said the President on his visit to Jamshoro had initiated dialogue with elite, educationists and intellectuals where participants had an interaction with the President on the issue.

They had full confidence in President Musharraf, he said, adding the issue would be discussed threadbare after the receipt of technical committee's report. However, there was an agreement on the need for having big water reservoirs to meet the future water needs, but it should be decided first whether the Bhasha Dam or Kala Bagh Dam be constructed first.

The minister said so far no decision had been taken about appointment of administrators to replace Nazims before the coming local bodies' elections for the sake of transparency and holding fair elections.

Regardig Balochistan issue, Mr Shaikh said the party chief, Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain had taken a right political initiative to solve the issue through dialogue. He said that the people of Balochistan should not consider themselves alone, we all would strive to solve their problems politically.

In reply to another question, he said the people had foiled the opposition campaign against holding two offices by the president and now MRD and MMA were no more in agreement on issues as their unity was un-natural against the government.

Earlier, in his initial statement, the minister said the function for launching PML membership drive would start at 11.30 am at the party office where Chief Minister Arbab Rahim, who is also President of the provincial chapter would sign the first form.

He said that Al-Haj Shamimuddin would be the chief coordinator during the membership drive which will culminate on March 31st. To another question, he said that the PPP would emerge as a populist party after the reorganization in Sindh and fully participate in the local bodies coming elections.
